How to feed your pet our whole food-based pet treats
Our treats for dogs, cats, ferrets, and pet rodents (e.g., rats, mice, guinea pigs, hamsters, chinchillas) are raw, USDA certified organic, and whole food-based. In fact, you need only look carefully at our organic pet treats to see all the nutritious foods they were made from!
You can feed our raw pet food products as treats or use them as macronutrients to supplement your pet's daily diet. Here are some feeding suggestions:
Feed them as they are -
You can simply feed our treats right out of the package. Dogs and rodents of all kinds love the crunchy texture of our raw dehydrated treats. All dogs enjoy our dry products as rewards or training aids; even most cats enjoy our Fishie Yum-Yums treats just as they are. Our vegan treats break easily into tiny pieces, which makes them ideal for training. Rodents love our organic Pet Pasta treats, not only because they're delicious (and nutritious), but also because they provide an entertaining 'workout' for those all-important incisor teeth! Our organic Gizzard Chews can be very hard, so when you feed them to your animal for the first time, please watch carefully how he or she handles them. Toy dog breeds in particular may actually do better with the small cut of the pieces we prepare for cats in our Gizzard Chews for Cats. You can also make these treats easier to handle by rehydrating them.
Mix our raw treats into your pet's dry food
You can also mix our dehydrated products into your pet's dry food to make the meal more interesting and nutritious. Our meat-based treats can actually provide a protein and fat supplement for your dog or cat's diet. Don't forget that one bag of dehydrated product contains the whole food ingredients in very concentrated (nearly water-free) form, and therefore has super high nutritional value!
Feed our raw treats rehydrated
To soften our whole food-based treats, simply add water before feeding. This is generally the best way to give our treats to cats or any animals that have trouble eating (e.g., sick animals, older animals, or animals with mouth or gum problems). In fact, our veterinarian often recommends rehydration of our organic rodent treats for sick rats and other ailing rodents.
You can use water or any other healthy liquid to rehydrate our treats; generally, just a few minutes will be enough to soften them. You'll probably need to adjust the length of time, depending on your pet's feeding preference.
Mix them into your pet's wet food
You can simply mix our treats into your pet's wet food. This way, you'll be adding healthy nutrients that aren't necessarily contained in your pet's normal diet.
Mix our raw organic treats into the fresh food you prepare
You can mix our treats into the fresh food you prepare in your own kitchen. You can add our raw treats to the ground, fresh vegetables and fruit you prepare for your pet's raw food diet. Our vegan treats can provide a handy, wholesome veggie/carbohydrate source, and our meat-based treats are ideal protein and fat supplements, saving you the trouble of dealing with raw meats. In any event, our products will supply a lot of real live nutrients! If you're convinced that your pet's vegetables need to be cooked, we suggest that you steam them only very briefly. Generally, though, we prefer ground raw plant ingredients over any heat preparation of vegetable and fruit ingredients (as even brief steaming destroys most nutrients).
Every pet is an individual with individual needs. Therefore you need to adjust the diet specifically to your companion's requirements. A holistic veterinarian can provide valuable advice to keep and make your pet healthy.
In general, cats should receive a minimum of 75% of their daily food as protein in addition to vegetables and fruits; dogs should receive at least 35% of their daily diet as protein. Dogs with cancer or chronic inflammation (e.g., arthritis) seem to benefit from a diet low in carbohydrates with at least 50% of proteins (e.g., fish or turkey; but no red meat or chicken) and 50% of non-starchy vegetables (cancer cells thrive on glucose, a digestive breakdown product of carbohydrates such as grains).
Organ meats and raw meaty bones (non-weight bearing bones, such as turkey necks) provide essential minerals and vitamins. Among others, our pets receive a daily dose of high quality fish oil on 'non-fish days', kelp, home-prepared yoghurt (live probiotics!), ground garlic, algae, and vegetables, as well as some healthful spices and whole food-based nutrient complexes. Occasionally our mammals also receive non-GMO yeast; however, we keep an eye out for any allergic reactions to it. We provide specific high quality supplements to animals with particular needs.
We adjust the quantity of foods that we feed our pets with the help of frequent 'weigh-ins'. This works for us more reliably than any other portion and weight control measure since both activity levels and diet composition often change from day to day.
